A groomer described the change to me in one line: five years ago, most calls opened with “how much?” Now they open with “what products do you use, and who handles my cat?”

That shift didn’t come from groomers deciding to raise their own bar. It came from the owners.

As pet ownership across the capital has grown, the people booking pet grooming in Abu Dhabi have become better informed, more specific about what they want, and far less willing to hand their animal over without knowing what happens next. Three things changed at once:

  • More pets, across more households and more communities
  • More regulation, with registration and microchipping now mandatory
  • More informed owners, many of whom learned the hard way after a skin problem or a badly matted coat

The number behind it: the UAE’s pet population rose by almost 60% between 2014 and 2024, reaching 938,000, according to Euromonitor figures. Abu Dhabi has formalised that growth faster than most every dog and cat in the emirate now requires registration through the government’s TAMM platform.

The result is a market where the standard has quietly moved. Here’s what drove it, and what it means for anyone booking grooming in the city today.

Formalisation changed how owners think about care

Registration matters here for a reason that isn’t immediately obvious.

The scheme is administered by Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport, with fines reaching AED 1,000 once the grace period closes earlier in 2026. Alongside it, the emirate expanded veterinary clinic numbers by 15% in a single year and launched Animal Welfare Abu Dhabi (AWAD) in early 2025.

Once an animal is formally recorded and microchipped, something shifts in how owners manage it. Care stops being estimated and starts being documented:

  • Vaccination dates are recorded rather than remembered
  • Clinic history follows the animal
  • Grooming moves onto a schedule instead of happening when the coat looks bad

An owner who tracks their pet’s veterinary record tends to track its grooming record too. That habit is what produced the more demanding customer groomers now deal with.

What owners started asking for

The questions changed before the services did. Four now come up routinely at booking.

What owners ask What it’s really about
“Which products do you use?” Skin sensitivity, allergies, coat-appropriate shampoo
“Who will handle my pet?” Experience with that specific breed and temperament
“How do you clean between animals?” Cross-contamination parasites and skin conditions
“What happens if my pet gets stressed?” Whether the session stops or gets pushed through

A decade ago the first question was price and the rest were rarely asked at all. That’s the clearest single measure of how much this market has matured.

Four standards that have risen noticeably

  1. Breed and coat-specific handling.
Owners have worked out that a Persian, a Husky and a short-haired rescue need three genuinely different approaches different tools, different drying times, different handling. Groomers applying one method to every animal now lose bookings to those who don’t.
  2. Product transparency.
Hypoallergenic and species-appropriate shampoos have moved from premium add-on to baseline expectation. The driver is Abu Dhabi’s climate: skin issues are common enough here that a large share of owners have dealt with one, and they don’t repeat the product that caused it.
  3. Stress management.
How a groomer handles a frightened animal is now a selling point rather than an afterthought. Owners ask directly, and they hear the difference between “we work through it” and “we stop and rebook.”
  4. Hygiene between animals.
This rose in prominence as multi-pet households grew. It’s a core item on any reasonable safety checklist for at-home grooming, and owners now raise it unprompted rather than assuming it’s handled.

Why Abu Dhabi’s conditions raised the bar faster

The environment here accelerated all of it.

Pets move constantly between extreme outdoor heat and sustained indoor air conditioning. That cycle dries skin, loosens coat and disrupts the shedding patterns owners might expect from a temperate climate, which is why “he’s not due yet” is so often wrong in this city.

Three local factors compound it:

Condition Effect on the coat
Heat and AC cycling Dry skin, unpredictable shedding, increased oil production
Daily sand and dust Settles into the coat and abrades skin, especially in long-haired breeds
Coastal humidity Traps moisture against the skin, encouraging matting and irritation

The practical consequence is that grooming in Abu Dhabi isn’t cosmetic maintenance. It’s the main defence against matting, skin irritation and the parasite problems that follow both.

Many owners reached the health benefits of regular pet grooming the hard way via a skin condition or a mat advanced enough to need clipping out. That experience is precisely what reshaped their expectations of a groomer.

The mobile grooming effect

Growth in at-home grooming changed the standard in a way that’s easy to underestimate.

When a groomer works in a salon, the owner sees the animal go in and come back out. When the groomer works at the doorstep, the owner sees everything:

  • How the animal is greeted and handled
  • Which products come out of the bag
  • Whether the equipment is actually clean
  • How long each stage genuinely takes
  • What happens the moment the pet objects

That visibility functions as a quality mechanism. A groomer working in front of the owner has nowhere to cut corners, and the growth in mobile grooming in Abu Dhabi has pulled standards up across the whole market as a result including among salons competing against it.

It also changed what “good” looks like. Owners who watched a proper session now recognise when they’re not getting one.

Cat owners drove more of this than dog owners

Worth noting, because it runs against the assumption.

Cats are harder to groom, less tolerant of handling, and far more likely to be injured by someone rushing. Owners of long-haired cats in particular became some of the most demanding customers in the market, because the consequences of a bad session are immediate and visible.

That pressure raised standards for everyone. The handling techniques, the session-length discipline and the stop-before-stress-builds approach that cat owners insisted on have since become general practice. Even providers offering dog grooming in Abu Dhabi now apply many of these same handling principles because calmer sessions and careful restraint benefit every pet.

What this means if you’re booking now

A higher bar only helps if you actually use it. Five things to do:

  1. Ask what products they use, and mention any skin sensitivity before the session rather than after it.
  2. Ask who will handle your pet, and what experience that person has with your breed or species.
  3. Ask about cleaning between animals, particularly if you have more than one pet at home.
  4. Ask what happens if your pet becomes distressed; the answer tells you most of what you need to know.
  5. Read reviews for specifics, not star ratings. One review describing how a nervous cat was handled is worth more than ten generic ones.

None of this is confrontational. Good groomers answer these questions readily, because they’re the questions they’d ask themselves.

Working through it properly does take time, which is why it’s worth knowing how to find a good groomer without spending weeks on the search.

The direction of travel

Abu Dhabi’s pet care market is still formalising. Registration is mandatory, veterinary capacity is expanding, and each year brings a better-informed group of owners than the last.

For groomers, that means the questions keep getting harder. For owners, it means the answers are increasingly available and there’s less reason than ever to settle for a service that won’t give them.
